Here are some ideas for games that boards love to play! Do you have an example of one of these games or another game that you have played on your board? Send me a link at boardqa@mail.ivillage.com so I can add it!

Game And Party Examples!

6 Degrees of Separation
Post an actress or actor's name.Then someone else post someone they've been in a movie or TV Show with (please try to name the Actor with first & last name and name the movie). Then so on and so on.
 
How Far Will You Go
A nice game reminiscent of the Highlights Magazine Headwork page...a series of questions to answer to see how far people can get in answering them.
 
All in the Word
Post a word that has to do with your board topic. Then in the thread post each letter separately. For example for Board Q and A I could go with Board. The first post would be B*O*A*R*D. Then as posts in the thread the first would B stands for, the second would be O stands for..., the third would be A stands for...., the fourth would be R stands for...., the fifth would be D stands for....
Then members would put a word under each letter that has to do with the word. For example someone might say the B stands for bringing people together.
 
Candid Camera
Surprise! Somebody, without your knowledge, videotaped everything you did in the last 24 hours (except using the toilet--they had some discretion!). So, think about your day, then answer these questions:
1. What's the stupidest thing they caught you doing?
2. What's the funniest thing?
3. What's the most embarrassing?
4. What's the sexiest thing?
5. What are you proudest of?
6. Is there anything you could get in trouble for?
7. If they paid you enough, would you let them show the tape on national TV?
 
 
Three Good Things With A Twist
Have members come up with three good things in their lives that have to do with each of their five senses.
Words Of Wisdom
Have your members share their words of wisdom for their children, for people new to the topic of your board, for other people who are now in their shoes. For example ask a newly married board for their words of wisdom for women who are engaged or on a health board ask for words of wisdom for people who just found out they had that condition. If you do this one, be sure to send the link to your Mod! She may be able to use those words of wisdom for permanent iVillage content. Members love it when their words show up in iVillage print! You know you are....
Start a sentence related to your board like:  You know you are a message board cl when... Then members come along and finish the sentence. For example you know you are an addicted message board cl when you read a book and think this would make great board material. You know you are an addicted message board cl when your child says that something isn't to be shared on your board. An example in action:

Tongue Twisters Pick a category related to your board and have your members come up with a tongue twister about that word/topic.

________Speak Give a type of person and a couple statements they may often say and your translation of what that really means. For example: Kidspeak: We didn't do anything at school today Translation: I just got home and want a snack not an interrogation.

Trivia Ask a question, the person getting the question right asks the next one and so on
 
ABC Game. A take off on I am going to grandmas house and taking a(n) that you played as a child. Start a sentence and then have members finish it with the next letter of the alphabet.
For example:
I am going to de-stress today with a(n)
Attitude adjustment
Then the next person would say:
I am going to de-stress today with a(n)
Attitude adjustment
Bath
And so on through the alphabet
 
ABC Game 2
Give a topic and each member names something to do with that topic that starts with each letter of the alphabet.
Examples:

A type of survey game. One category for each letter of the alphabet. You can change what each letter stands for to be more appropriate for your board if you wish!

ABC game #4- A You Are Adorable
This is a variation that is especially great on parenting boards. Name a quality that suits your child that begins with each letter or talk about your child in the letter that begins their name.
 

Liars Poker
You post 3 statements about yourself or your family. Two statements are lies, one is the truth. After your message has been posted, people try to guess which is the truth. We reveal our answers the next day.
 
The M&M game. This is a great getting to know you game that takes 2 or more days. In the first post, offer M&M candies to your members. No calories, as many as they want. They just need to tell you how many they take of each color. In the follow up post, they need to tell you something about themselves according to the color code you provide.

I Have Never
#1. Post something you have never done but think someone else has.
#2. Read the posts IN ORDER, from 1-whatever. After you have read three things that you HAVE done, you must stop and post your name under the third post. In other words, if someone posts that they have never brushed their teeth, someone else posts that they have never been outside their hometown, and someone else posts that they have never had bad breath, then I would have to stop right there and post my name under the bad breath post.
 
Mystery Celebrity
Clues that will lead a member to guess the mystery celeb Example:
 
Jeopardy-Board Style. Think of a question and keep it to yourself. Provide a series of possible answers for the members to choose from. Give the members time to give their answer. Then post the original question. Examples in action: ost
 
Movie Quotes
 
Name that Tune Give a lyric and let them guess the song/artist
 
Scavenger Hunt
Give the first clue to the scavenger hunt on your board. It will give you hints on where to go next. Read the hint, and then members find the board. Once they find it they should find another post from you labeled with your board name and scavenger hunt, with another hint. They follow throughout the iVillage boards posting under each clue that they have been there.
 
Add a line or Add a Word stories Start with a line or 3-5 words that the members take turns adding on to the story.
 
20 Questions Pick someone to be it, members take turns asking questions (up to 20) and guessing the secret word
 
Hangman Pick a word, right letter guesses get the word partially filled in, and wrong answers get a piece added to the hangman
 
100 Things about you Have members list 100 things about themselves 100 things in action:
 
What City are you in? Give a landmark and have them guess
 
Make a list Have members make a list given a topic (list as many kingdoms that still stand that you can, Cities that begin with C with population over 100,000, etc)
 
Proverbs/Clichés Ask members to list 5 proverbs or 5 clichés containing a certain wordi.e. the word could be time, one of the answers could be a stitch in time saves nine.
 
Progressive Trivia (Millionaire)
You ask a question at the same time each day. Members answer, correct answers move to the next days round. Here are the rules:
1. Checking other answers, researching or asking friends/family/co-workers is not permitted
2. Answering a question wrong or not answering means you are out.
 
Name that Poet Give a line from a famous poem and have them guess the poet
 
Mother Goose/Fairy Tale headlines-Create a headline based on a fairy tale or nursery rhyme and have members guess the story/rhyme.
 
Observation Quiz Ask questions based on things people see on a regular basis. What color stripe is directly below the blue on the U.S. flag? What side of the shirt are buttons on a mens shirt? Etc
 
Famous in literature (or movies, history, etc) Give a letter that all answers begin with, first name and rough description (English novelist, American playwright, action film star, etc)

Ghost
You name a letter other than x or z. Members continue adding letters attempting NOT to finish a word, but they must be able to name a word with that sequence of letters in it if challenged. If you create a word or if you get a sequence that cannot conclude in a word, you lose.
 
Scrambled Words Provide a list of 5 or so scrambled words; first member to unscramble them all correctly wins
 
Little Words from Big Give a long word or phrase and have members come up with as many words as they can from rearranging the letters in the word. You may want to set a 4-letter minimum for experienced players.
Word Association
Give a two-word phrase such as lunch box. Next member takes the second word and attaches another word to make a common pair. Lunch box could then be box spring to which the next player would make spring loaded and so on
 
Recipe
Give a set of ingredients and the option for the member to add 2 more ingredients and they must create a recipe using some portion of them. (5 or so)
 
Old Mother Hubbards Cupboard
Your cupboard is bare except for these items, what can you make for dinner?
 
 
Slogans Give a slogan. Members guess the company/product
 
Acronyms Provide a word. Members use each letter of the word to create a phrase that relates to the word. Summer: School's Unleashed Marauding Minors Everywhere: RUN!
 
Create-A-Plate Provide a person (real, imaginary or type of person) that you want your members to create a vanity license plate for. Ask them to create a personalized plate using a max of 7 letters, numbers, and spaces, along with the translation of the plate. Example a plate for a surgeon could be oper8ng
 
Definition Give a word and have members give you silly definitions for the word. No dictionary allowed!
 
Email who? Describe a person and have members create an email address or screen name that would best suit that person
 
Poetry! Provide a style of poetry (limericks and haiku both work well) Provide a topic. Stand back and grin as you read the crazy verses.

Silly Sentences Use your literary talents to create a sentence using rhyming words. How to Play: Come up with words that rhyme with the given word. Then combine them into a silly sentence! Example: hot Acting like a big shot he climbed aboard his yacht but his ascot got caught in the slot where there should've been a knot.

Square Deal Four words, four letters, fill in one word for each category for each of the four letters given.

Boggle
This is how it works. I will post some letters below. You make words from the letters given but they have to go in order. For example, if I put:
X Y Z
A B C
V E S
T U V
You could answer bay easily because b touches a and a touches Y (diagonally). You could not do save because S and A don't touch.
Post your list of words from the next set of letters. Each word should be at least 3 letters long. Then we'll award points for the number completed.
3 letters==1 point
4 letters==2 points
5 letters=3 points
6 letters or more==4 points
